Story

It began with a memory. Founder Arya Sora grew up in a haveli in Jaipur where every corner held its own scent — the courtyard after rain, the prayer room thick with sandalwood, the kitchen doorway trailing saffron and cardamom. These weren't just smells. They were rooms. Places you could return to with your eyes closed.

In 2019, living in a Mumbai apartment that felt like it had no smell at all, Arya began formulating. Not to recreate those childhood rooms exactly, but to distil the feeling of belonging they carried.

Room of Sora sources raw materials from across the subcontinent. Oud resin from Assam aged in open-air distilleries. Rose absolute cold-pressed in Kannauj — the perfume capital of India — where the craft has survived 400 years of Mughal influence. Saffron hand-harvested in Kashmir's Pampore valley at dawn, when the stigmas hold the most volatile aroma compounds.

Every ingredient is a structural element. We think of top notes as the entrance, heart notes as the room itself, and base notes as what remains when you leave.

Our studio sits in a narrow lane in Mumbai's Bandra West neighbourhood. Six perfumers. One micro-batch still. The mixing, filling, and sealing of each bottle is done by hand — never automated. Each batch is 400 units. When it's gone, it's gone until the next season.

The bottle itself was designed with a ceramicist in Pune: a thick-walled rectangular vessel, mouth-blown, with a brushed-gold cap and a single cream label bearing only the room's name. Nothing more.
